Green Bamboo – Phyllostachys Nuda

Nuda is known as one of the most adaptable plants as it is one of the most cold hardy varietuies of bamboo, with tolerance of temperatures down to minus 20 degrees. The new canes are a dark green, almost a black color in appearance with the nodal areas creating a ring effect due to a white powdery ring. As the canes age they become more green. The contrasting colors of the old and new canes are extremely ornamental and make a striking grove display. In our area, nuda culms range from ¾” to 1 ½”, and can reach 15 to 20 feet in height. It is a running bamboo; plant nuda where it has room to spread or contain it with bamboo barrier. An added bonus to this bamboo is that the new shoots in the spring are edible.
